MoDOT’s Fifth Annual Poster and Coloring Contest Underway
SIKESTON – All children want their moms and dads to come home safely from work each day, so who better to remind drivers to slow down in work zones. MoDOT is looking for students in third through sixth grades and children the ages of two through five to help spread the word about work zone safety and help keep motorists and MoDOT workers safe.
“We want to make children and adults aware of the importance of work zone safety and the poster and coloring contest are a good tool to use,” said District Engineer Scott Meyer. “We’ve asked children in grades three through six to draw a poster showing why work zone safety is important. Their knowledge and creativity over the years has been very touching.”
Last year, nearly 2,000 entries helped alert motorists of the dangers of speeding through work zones. One read, “If it was your mommy, you’d slow down.”
“The entries hit home. Children understand those are someone’s parents working out there, and hopefully, they’ll help us to get drivers to understand that,” Meyer said. “They are our best chance at getting adults to understand that lives depend on work zone safety.”
MoDOT is currently looking for entries in both contests. To enter the poster contest, send MoDOT a poster showing why work zone safety is important. Student’s name, grade, and school should be on the back of the poster. Posters can be any size.
To enter the coloring contest, log onto MoDOT’s website at www.modot.org, click Southeast District. Coloring sheets can be printed from the website for the 2-3 age group and the 4-5 age group.
Entries in both contests should be sent to MoDOT-Southeast District, P.O. Box 160, Sikeston, MO 63801 by March 9. The posters and coloring sheets will not be returned.
MoDOT will announce winners March 18. Winning entries will be on display at Westfield Shoppingtown-West Park in Cape Girardeau in April. First place winners will get an interactive work zone safety assembly for their school or daycare including the opportunity to see MoDOT’s big trucks up close.
“Safety is our number one priority. If sharing information can improve safety for just one of our employees who spend the day working inches from traffic or anyone using our transportation system, then this program will be a success,” said Meyer.
