Project Status: Construction moves into Stage 1, Phase 2.  Westbound traffic has been placed onto a new, temporary lane and eastbound traffic on the existing westbound lane through fall.  This will allow the new eastbound lanes for Route 45 to be built between North Crooked Road and Route K.

Why is MoDOT doing this project?

Route 45 is a critical east/west route and capacity is expected to increase substantially by the year 2030. These improvements will accommodate economic development, and most important, improve traffic safety. It will also create a safe, efficient, environmentally sound, and economical transportation facility that meets the needs of the area.

How does this project benefit me?

Widening Route 45 will ease congestion and offer a safer road for thousands of motorists daily.  Based on the current design, there are more than 80 access points available for vehicles to pull off the roadway. With the construction of an additional lane in each direction, vehicles will be able to go around stalled vehicles with no chance for a head on collision with opposing traffic. The design for the new roadway is also safer than the existing road.

MoDOT will also construct a 10 foot shared use path on the south side of the road. This path will help accommodate multiple users with different modes of transportation.  This path will help link the rest of Platte County's trail system which has similar widths in other parts of the county.

What is the project time line?

Construction will be conducted in Three Stages.  Each stage will be done with the same four phases.  This will minimize impact to area residents and community.  Each stage must be completed before moving on to the next one.

  • Stage 1 will be constructed from North Crooked Road to Route K:  May 2011 through fall 2011
    • Phase 1 — Temporary pavement construction on westbound lane of Route 45. This work includes grading, temporary asphalt pavement, culvert extensions, demolition work, temporary signals, etc.
    • Phase 2 — Construct new eastbound lanes of Route 45. The work includes grading, concrete pavement , storm drainage, curb & gutter, lighting, share use path, etc.
    • Phase 3 — Includes construction of the new westbound lanes of Route 45. The work includes grading, concrete pavement , storm drainage, curb & gutter, MSE Walls, median, etc.
    • Phase 4 — Median work and clean up.
  • Stage 2 will be constructed Route 9 to The National roundabout.
  • Stage 3 will be constructed from The National Roundabout to North Crooked Road

Contractors will strive to maintain one open lane of traffic in each direction at all times along Route 45 during construction. However, some side roads may need to be closed temporarily to rebuild them. Detoured routes will be in place during any such closures.

How much does this project cost?

In November 2004, Missouri voters passed Amendment 3, which allowed the funding of new major projects including Route 45 between Route 9 and Route K.  The total construction cost for thie project is about $16 million.
