What work will be done to the bridges?
Each of the three lanes through the work zone will be closed one at a time and worked on, then reopened as work moves to different lanes. While two lanes will remain open at all times, the lane widths may be narrower. Concrete barriers will protect workers from the interstate traffic. In the work zone the speed limit will be reduced for the safety of motorists and workers. Please drive safely in the work zone to ensure you or others are not injured.
Why Don't I See Workers All the Time?
These repairs will differ from bridge to bridge, but the project heavily involves concrete deck repairs that must be done in a very specific order. This is necessary in order to provide the in-depth repairs that will last decades. A disadvantage to concrete repairs is the long period of time it takes for the concrete to dry, or "cure".
All the time, concrete is curing the lane must be closed, but often other work cannot be done on the lane while its curing. Bridges are engineering marvels, travellers take for granted. One of the key rules of engineering is that only so much of a bridge surface can be compromised at a time and it still safely function. This limits how many repairs can be done at one time on the bridge.
Even if you do not see workers, don't assume nothing is being done. With the tight schedule provided, the contractor will have to work hard and continuously to meet the deadline.
