What will be done to the roads?
MoDOT will improve the roads through thin level surface or seal on the roads through three main types of treatment:
Resurfacing: Most roads will be treated with a thin surface of asphalt by the contractor. MoDOT maintenance staff will fill ruts and pot holes on the roads before the contractor resurfaces the road. This is represented in blue on the map.
Hot-in-Place Recycling: Each road will receive a one inch overlay utilizing this process that includes heating the old road to more than 300ºF, raking the old asphalt, grinding it into smaller pieces, mixing it with a road tar, immediately laying it back onto the road. It is an especially effective option for low-cost maintenance to remove cracks, ruts, and low areas. This is only in Lafayette County for MO 20, 23, and 213.
Contract Chip Seal: Chip sealing is a preventative maintenance to help rejuvenate the state roadways by preserving the current condition. The operation consists of placing a thin layer of rock chips and oil along the roadway. This seals and protects the surface, prolonging the life of the pavement, improves friction between vehicle tires and the driving surface to help increase drivers’ safety during poor driving conditions. This is represented in red on the map.
