Why is MoDOT doing this study?
Based on a review of previous or ongoing studies on I-35 corridor in the Kansas City metropolitan area, MoDOT determined that there was need for additional study of I-35 between the southwest corner of the downtown loop and the Kansas state line. As a result, MoDOT selected to conduct a operational study for this section of I-35.
Below are completed or ongoing studies that have evaluated I-35 corridor.
What is purpose of this study?
The I-35 Operationa Study is intended to:
- Determine the current and future needs of the I-35 corridor.
- Develop improvement concepts for addressing those needs.
- Recommend a preferred course of action for improving I-35 in the future.
What is the study area?
The study area stretches approximately 300 feet on either side of I-35 from 12th Street (southwest corner of the downtown loop) to the Kansas State line. The study corridor touches several neighborhoods: Downtown, the Westside, the Crossroads and Crown Center/Union Station.
What is the project time line?
The study will continue throughout the spring and summer and conclude in early 2011.
How might this affect my neighborhood?
MoDOT’s intent is to stay within its right of way with the proposed solutions from the study.
Will construction begin soon?
No funding for future construction has been identified at this time.
The development of transportation improvements involves the following four phases – planning, environmental, design, and construction. The operational study of I-35 is in the planning phase. The remaining phases are contingent upon available funding and federal, state, and local priorities. Anywhere from a few to many years could be needed to complete the entire process.
