Working Together to Handle Traffic
To better deal with traffic during interchange construction, MoDOT is coordinating with area employers and partners to develop a set of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies to ease the amount of traffic using the Interchange during that time. TDM aims to redistribute or shrink the amount of traffic entering and leaving an area while also offering a range of transportation options to better maximize the capacity of the system.
TDM choices are demand- or supply-based. Demand-based opportunities concentrate on employers and employees while those that are supply-based focus on traffic operation and movement. Often supply-based TDM strategies result in the creation of additional transportation infrastructure, such as traffic signals and turn lanes. However, with increased gas prices and environmental concerns, MoDOT wants to promote demand-based TDM’s geared to:
- Encourage employers and employees to use alternative modes of transportation (transit, carpools, and vanpools) during the construction of the new I-435/Front Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI).
- Reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles entering the Interchange during construction to reduce traffic demand during rush hours.

Several strategies depend upon coordination with the RideShare Program from the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) and the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA). Successful management of the traffic coming into and out of the Interchange at the time of construction will hinge on everyone, especially large employers and partners like MoDOT, KCATA, and MARC working together to implement the TDM strategies most suited to their business and portion of the I-435/Front Street Interchange Study Area.
